Say you have just taken a seat at a live blackjack table, two cards land in front of you and a timer starts ticking while the dealer waits. Unlike baccarat, this game asks you to make decisions, and those decisions matter. The good news is that the right move for almost every hand has already been worked out. This guide explains the rules, the four main choices, how live seats work, and how to enjoy the game without letting it run away from you.
The rules in one minute
Number cards count at face value, picture cards count as ten, and an ace counts as one or eleven, whichever helps more. You and the dealer each get two cards, and one of the dealer's cards is shown face up.
Your goal is to beat the dealer's total without going over twenty-one. Go over and you bust, which loses straight away, even if the dealer busts later. An ace plus a ten-value card on your first two cards is a blackjack, which usually pays more than a normal win. The exact payout is printed on the table, so read it before you play.
Once every player has finished, the dealer plays by fixed rules, usually drawing until reaching a set total. You never have to guess what the dealer will choose.
Hit, stand, double or split
These four buttons are where blackjack becomes a game of choices rather than pure chance.
- Insurance is a side bet on the dealer having blackjack and is usually best skipped.
- Our article on when to split in blackjack covers pairs in more detail.
| Choice | What it does | When it often makes sense |
|---|---|---|
| Hit | Take another card | Your total is low and cannot bust with one more card |
| Stand | Keep your total and end your turn | You hold a solid total, or the dealer shows a weak card |
| Double down | Double your stake and take exactly one card | Your first two cards make a strong starting total against a weak dealer card |
| Split | Turn a pair into two separate hands with a second stake | You hold certain pairs, such as two aces or two eights |
Basic strategy without the headache
Say the dealer shows a six and you hold twelve. Instinct says hit, but basic strategy says stand, because the dealer has a good chance of busting. Basic strategy is simply a chart, built by mathematicians, that lists the best play for every combination of your hand and the dealer's visible card.
Following it does not make you a winner every night. It just makes sure you are not giving away more than the game already takes. Keep a chart open on another screen while you learn, and play slowly. Live tables give you a decision timer, and taking your time is perfectly normal.
Seats, Bet Behind and staying in control
Live blackjack tables often have a fixed number of seats. When they are full, some tables let you place a Bet Behind, which means your chips follow another player's decisions. It is a handy way to join a busy table, but you give up control of the hand.
Before you sit down, set a budget for the session and a chip size that fits it, and read our deposit guide if you have not used the cashier yet. Promotions may treat blackjack differently from slots, so read the terms on JitaAce first. The live casino hub lists other tables, and baccarat is a good change of pace when you want fewer decisions.
